Chapter Books for Fourth and Fifth Graders

Here are some great Chapter Book suggestions for 4th and 5th grade readers, available at the Warren Township Library and in the Somerset County Library system.

Year of the Book by Andrea Cheng - A young Chinese-American girl navigates relationships with family, friends and her 4th-grade classroom and finds a true best friend.

How to Train Your Dragon: the Heroic Misadventures of Hiccup the Viking by Cressida Cowell (series: How to Train Your Dragon) - Chronicles the adventures and misadventures of Hiccup Horrendous Haddock the Third as he tries to pass the important initiation test of his Viking clan, the Tribe of the Hairy Hooligans, by catching and training a dragon.

Bud, Not Buddy by Christopher Paul Curtis - 10-year-old Bud, a motherless boy living in Flint, Michigan during the Great Depression, escapes a bad foster home and sets out in search of the man he believes to be his father. (also available as an e-book)

The BFG by Roald Dahl - Kidsnatched from her orphanage by a BFG (Big Friendly Giant), who spends his life blowing happy dreams to children, Sophie concocts with him a plan to save the world from nine other man-gobbling cannybull giants. (also available as an e-book)

Ophelia and the Marvelous Boy by Karen Foxlee - Ophelia suspends her disbelief in things non-scientific when a boy locked in the museum where her father is working asks her to help him complete an age-old mission. (also available as an e-book)

Odd Squad by Michael Fry - When his school counselor insists that he needs better socialization skills after being stuffed into a locker by a bully, middle-schooler Nick finds himself, along with two other misfits, joining the school's lamest club: Safety Patrol.

A Tale Dark and Grimm by Adam Gidwitz - Follow Hansel and Gretel as they walk out of their own story and into eight more tales, encountering such wicked creatures as witches, along with kindly strangers and other helpful folk.

Escape from Mr. Lemoncello's Library by Chris Grabenstein - 12-year-old Kyle gets to stay overnight in the new town library, designed by his hero (the famous gamemnaker Luigi Limoncello), with other students but finds that come morning he must work with friends to solve puzzles in order to escape. The Call by Michael Grant (series: Magnificent 12) - A seemingly average 12-year-old learns that he is destined to gather a team of similarly gifted children to try to save the world from a nameless evil, which is threatening to reappear after having been imprisoned for 3,000 years. The 13-Story Treehouse by Andy Griffiths - Who wouldn't want to live in a treehouse? Life would be perfect for Andy and Terry if it wasn't for the fact that they have to write their next book, which is almost impossible because there are just so many distractions. (also available as an e-book)

Inside Out and Back Again by Thanhha Lai - Through a series of poems, a young girl chronicles the life-changing year of 1975, when she, her mother, and her brothers leave Vietnam and resettle in Alabama. (also available as an e-book)

Misadventures of the Family Fletcher by Dana Alison Levy - Relates the adventures of a family with two fathers, four adopted boys, and a variety of pets as they make their way through a school year and deal with a grumpy new neighbor.

The Only Game by Mike Lupica - Sixth grade is supposed to be the year that Jack Callahan would lead his team to a record-shattering season and the Little League World Series, but after the death of his brother he loses interest in baseball and only Cassie, the start of the girls' softball team, seems to understand.

The Ice Dragon by George R.R. Martin - Leaving in its wake desolate cold and frozen land, the legendary ice dragon has never been tamed until it meets Adara, a winter child who looks to the creature to help save her world from destruction.

My Big Fat Zombie Goldfish by Mo O'Hara - Tom's goldfish is horrifically transformed after his evil scientist bib brother's experiment goes wrong, an accident that imbues the goldfish with hypnotic powers and a thirst for revenge.

Holes by Louis Sachar - As further evidence of his family's bad fortune, Stanley Yelnats is sent to a correctional camp in the Texas desert where he finds his first real friend, a treasure, and a new sense of himself. (also available as an e-book)

Caitlin's Lucky Charm by Lisa Schroeder (series: Charmed Life) - When faced with returning home from summer camp to an upset home life, Caitlin takes the first turn wearing a good-luck charm bracelet hat she and her cabin roommates bought together, hoping it will turn her luck around. Rump by Liesl Shurtliff - Relates the tale of Rumpelstiltskin's childhood and youth, explaining why his name is so important, how he is able to spin straw into gold, and why a first-born child is his reward for helping the miller's daughter-turned-queen. (also available as an e-book)

Eddie Red Undercover: Mystery on Museum Mile by Marcia Wells (series: Eddie Red) - Sixth grader Edmund Xavier Lonnrot, codename "Eddie Red," has a photographic memory and taken for drawing anything he sees. When the NYPDis stumped by a mastermind art thief, Eddie becomes their secret weapon to solve the case.

Beth's Story, 1914 by Adele Whitby (series: Secrets of the Manor) - Beth is excited for her 12th birthday, when she will receive her great-grandmother's heirloom necklace as a gift, but when the necklace goes missing, , Beth must learn the secrets of her manor house in order to clear the name of her maid and friend, Shannon.
