Author Will Discuss His Book Based on a Man's Real-Life Ordeal

Author & attorney, John W. Hartmann

John W. Hartmann, a Trenton-based attorney and author, will be at the Warren Township Library this Thursday, December 6, to discuss his book, Jacket: The Trials of a New Jersey Criminal Defense Attorney.

This engaging, irreverent and most unusual memoir is a compelling read for Law and Order fans. Hartmann weaves tidbits of the criminal justice system as well as his own experiences throughout the plot, which focuses on the hardships of one of Hartmann’s clients, Nathaniel Oliver, who spent three years in prison for a crime he didn't commit.
Oliver was convicted on multiple charges of robbery, theft, aggravated assault, terroristic threats, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and unlawful possession of a weapon  and sentenced to seven years in jail by on Oct. 4, 2002. He filed an appeal and was found not guilty in a re-trial in May 2005.

Hartmann's book, "Jacket," has received praise including the prestigious Kirkus Review, which said: "Hartmann’s reflections are entertainingly scattershot, nimbly jumping from one impossibly absurd scenario to another, capturing the surreal wheels of justice in motion. Comedic quips often speckle the stories, softening the accounts of arid legal complexities and human tragedy. A keen, lighthearted look at the human side of law'.

A review by NJ.com commended Hartmann for an "excellent job of weaving in New Jersey history and facts."
